Teething Pain & Home Remedies

Published November 2025 • Health Connect Clinic

Teething syndrome, or “teething,” is a normal process that some infants and children go through as their teeth cut through their gums. They might experience some discomfort during this time.

Most of the time, the new tooth will appear without problems. However, if you notice white pus around the tooth, irritation lasting more than a week, or a fever, you should visit a doctor.

Common Symptoms During Teething

Here are some of the most common symptoms when your child’s teeth are erupting, especially molars around 6 years of age:

  • Gum inflammation
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Low-grade fever
  • Jaw pain
  • Swelling
  • Infection
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Trouble eating solid food

How Can You Ease the Pain?

For Babies:

  • Rub your baby's gums: Use a clean finger or wet gauze to gently rub your baby's gums. The pressure can ease discomfort.
  • Keep it cool: A cold spoon or chilled teething ring (not frozen) can soothe the gums. Avoid sugary substances to prevent cavities.
  • Try an over-the-counter remedy: If your baby is cranky, consider infants' or children's pain medications like acetaminophen (Panadol) or ibuprofen (Advil).

For Children:

  • Gum massage: Rubbing the gums with wet gauze, or having your child do it themselves, may reduce pain temporarily.
  • Ice water: Drinking cold beverages can help ease irritation.
  • Ibuprofen: Can offer temporary pain relief.
  • Peppermint: Soak a cotton ball in peppermint extract and place it over the painful area.
  • Soft and cool diet: Offer soft and cool foods like soups, mashed potatoes, popsicles, or smoothies to minimize discomfort.

Homemade Remedies

Fruit Popsicles:

Healthy fruit popsicles to ease sore gums:

  • Blend your child’s favorite fruit with a little water until thick, puree-form.
  • Pour the mixture into popsicle molds or small cups with sticks inserted.
  • Cover the containers with foil and insert a popsicle stick in each one.
  • Freeze overnight; ready by morning.

Healthy Smoothie Recipe:

A nutritious smoothie rich in healthy fats, vitamin E, and iron:

  • 1 frozen ripe banana
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup cottage cheese
  • 1 tbsp almond butter

Optional: Add chocolate chips or cocoa nibs for taste. Sweeten with maple syrup or agave if desired. Almond butter can be replaced with peanut butter or other nut butters.
